About the band
Starting from a young age, Terry’s career has taken him across the continent as an ever ardent guitarist, singer-songwriter, and bandleader including an ongoing stint as lead guitarist with surf legends Jan & Dean. Neil Donato’s work as a keyboardist follows his interests through many genres of improvised music. He values the individual contributions creative musicians make to their collective art form, looking for innovative ways to further the role of the keyboard in modern music.
A Pittsburgh native, Neil took up the piano at age 8, inspired by all styles of music. After high school, he headed an hour south to Morgantown to study music at West Virginia University. College summers were spent playing in the Live Shows at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, where he met and performed with many outstanding musicians from across the Midwest.
Upon graduation, Neil won an audition with the United States Training and Doctrine Command Band, stationed at historic Fort Monroe, Virginia, where he served as a keyboardist and staff arranger. During his time with the unit, the band received both the Army Superior Unit Award and the George S. Howard Citation for Musical Excellence. He played all over the country at state fairs, colleges and universities, and locally for ceremonies, concerts and festivals. Following military service, a successful audition at the University of Michigan brought him to Ann Arbor for graduate school.
Since putting down roots in Michigan, Neil has played for more than a dozen Broadway musicals including the second national tour of Mamma Mia!, A Chorus Line, and Beautiful. Always an advocate of live, local music, he has played and recorded with CityGoat, The Flying Latini Brothers, Giraffe, and Dave & Kristi, among others. He is an active performer on the Detroit music scene and across the state.
Neil holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from West Virginia University and a Master of Music degree in improvisation from the University of Michigan. He teaches jazz and instrumental music at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor.
